WAIT! Did You Say Anyone Can Edit Content on a Wiki???
Before starting a wiki, make sure it is a project that will benefit from collaboration. If you feel strongly that you should be the "owner" of the content provided, a wiki may not be the best tool for your project.
Having said that, you do not need to give up all control on a wiki.
Wiki Security
- Most wikis allow you to set permissions for different people.
- You can password-protect wikis and hand out the password only to people who are authorized to edit.
- Depending on the wiki software used, you can set these permissions at the page level.
- Some wiki packages also allow you to lock pages from editing.
- Even in wikis that are wide open for editing, you can track the most recent changes on a wiki or easily access the history of each page.
- SPAM is a problem on wikis, as in any Web 2.0 application. Finding a wiki product with SPAM protection might be a priority.
- PBwiki's Safety and security FAQ and Education-specific questions addresses some questions related to security.
